How is it affecting you?
Weve had our first case at work, a girl is now off sick with it!!!!
Lucky escape for me she nearly come round mine a week ago! ;-)
So, I just went to the NHS website (as directed by an internal council email) and did the online symptom checker.....
My results came out like this
[glow=red,2,300]Call 999 Your answers suggest you need to dial 999 immediately and ask for an ambulance. You need to tell the ambulance operator that you have recently travelled to (or live in) an area of high swine flu risk or that you have been in contact with someone with the illness.[/glow]
great!

it is entirely different as it is a completely different strain, just like avian flu.
Just because it has the word flu in it it isnt as cut and dry as that.

Just because it has the word flu in it it isnt as cut and dry as that. it is, its just there is no weakness in the flu, no one has an immune system to it, and according to reports the most vulnerable parties are our age groups for some reason, unlike normal flu which seems to target the old and very young, where as other flu pandemics like this they seem to target the supposidly strong groups as we are all on a level playing field with this one and we dont get the flu vaaccines or look after ourselves as we should do, but it will only kill just like normal flu if there are complications i.e. pneumonia etc, it works exactly the same as normal flu but because it has come from a diff species we are all vulnerable but with good care etc it isnt harmful

coem onthen steve back your facts up
how many deaths this year world wide from "normal" flu
how many from swine flu

Well the most conclusive reports i can get for swine flu deaths are as in total 557 in total but the numbers are very vague, But according to CNN news something like 13,000 people have died, from normal seasonal flu since january and its estimated that 500,000 people will die from seasonal flu. They were also stating that between jan and april 800 people a week died from seasonal flu. Now i know that swine flu isnt quite hitting the masses just yet but percentages would suggest it isnt anything to seriously worry about just yet.

Ordinary flu and pandemic flu - the differences Ordinary flu:
occurs every year during the winter affects 10 to 15 per cent of the UK popuation most people recover within 1 or 2 weeks without medical treatment can be identified in advance and a vaccine can be made (this immunisation is known as the flu jab and helps protect people from ordinary flu) Pandemic flu:
occurs during any season affects more people than ordinary flu (up to half the population) is a more serious infection people of all ages may be at risk of infection a vaccine cannot be made because the virus strain has not been identifed antiviral medicine is stockpiled to treat people

Im not saying panic, what im saying is, if i were a parent, i would want to know where definate outbreaks were if i was planning on taking my children there

my approach isnt one sided just stating facts. and its not just little johnny that should be worried its our age group thats more at risk than what is normally the larger at risk groups. If you look at previous epidemics like this one, then the largets hit group was healthy 16-60 year olds. We shouldnt panic at all this isnt much greater a threat to us than the normal flu and places dont close or deaths get reported on because people died of flu. We live in a country where anti viral drugs are easily available and there should be a vaccine in the next few months so theres really nothing to worry about. The onlt time we should worry is if the strain mutates into something stronger then it will become deadly ;D
