Searched the forum, but there doesn't seem to be any sort of a high level Newbie Do's & Don'ts advice anywhere. So, posing a few questions hoping to pick up some wisdom:
1. Are there skill caps (or range) on each scouting age group? If so, what are they? 2. Benefit in playing till they retire if relevant skill top 11 for your club vs attempt to sell (or release) a year before? 3. How much fitness is gained back if a player does not play a game?
More later, as I go through the mechanics.

1. Normally best to scout 17-20 (I think it is) and you're likely to get a range of ratings, with players aged above 20 scouting outfield players is a bit of a gamble and it's not as popular as there isn't as much success to be had as the ratings are much the same as the 17-20 year olds. Before players are 18 they are limited to a cap of no more than 3+ their age. The best scout you're likely to get is 3+ I.e. A 17 year old 20 rated with high ability points although they're pretty rare
2. This is entirely up to you and what you're trying to achieve, it's always useful to get something for players that are retiring but then again could be valuable depending on how your season is going towards the end. Releasing would be a last resort after auctioning I would say as you're not going to get much from it.
3. I've not had much experience with this but whenever I've had a player at 96 they've went back up to 100 with a games rest.
I'm relatively new here (just over a year) so I'm sure some of our more veteran bosses will be able to narrow down the answers a bit more accurately.
Also, welcome to the game!

Welcome to the game mate. Resting players on about 90 to 92 will get them back to full fitness.
In terms of what "good" players look like - have a look on the transfer screen - you can rank players to see where your squad ranks

Welcome aboard Tim!
As Dillon said the only age group worth Scouting is the 17-21s, the older players are over priced and the younger ones will take years to develop.
As for the benefit of selling older players or use them until they retire that depends on if you have players who can fill in for them if you sell and if you can I would advise to try and do a swap rather than getting just cash.
As for good players, in your league you should be looking at a minimum of 24 rated for outfields players but having some younger 23 rated as backups is a good idea.
The only other advice I would give is don't rush into any deals as your team doesn't need much done to it right now, I would say wait until the new season if you can or at least give it a few games first before deciding to do deals.

I would possibly say that the more 25/26 rated and above the better your team will do in that division. Once you get to 27/28 rated those players are getting pretty good and anything 29/30 rated or plus is exceptional
In terms of keepers - 35 and above are the best as the base line for keepers is a bit higher.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I've got lots of outfielders in the 22-28 range, I guess they are all good for my current league but many of them (a good 10 odd) are old, in the 30-34 age group. I guess I will worry about it next season, there is still a lot left this season to mount a promotion push.

Hi fella
Sounds like you have a sound grasp of the basics. I've been around since season 9 and they are all a good bunch of lads in this game.
As Stu said though watch out for the vultures. They will pick your squad apart if you are not careful. If you want advice on how much your players are worth or what deals are good I would recommend Rags at Munich he's pretty sound in these matters.

How long can I leave my scouts available to reject or accept? Haven't made my decision yet on which ones to bring in or let go, hope the clock isn't ticking!

Are there skill caps (or range) on each scouting age group? If so, what are they? Answered above.2. Benefit in playing till they retire if relevant skill top 11 for your club vs attempt to sell (or release) a year before? Do you need the player to push for promotion or win a cup? If not, consider investing in a younger replacement.3. How much fitness is gained back if a player does not play a game? A player will lose 2-4% per game. A 15-20min rest is sufficient to recover their fitness. So if you start a player with fitness 96% and sub him in the 75th min, he should be back to 100% for your next match.More later, as I go through the mechanics.
