Just extracted the reserves - 22 rated to 17 rated - attached. About 10 seasons ago I remember that there were plenty of players available less than 23 rated and we never had any issues with the number of reserve players. I think back then we were all scouting youngsters and this was helping to replenish the reserves as the 22 rated turned 23. We would also have seen managers being more willing to play those 23 raters. Now we see more and more scouts that arent youths - so we just dont have that many players being created at 18 to 20 rated that help fill the reserves for a few years. I think we have a real problem in a few years - just look at the midfielders... There are only 217 midfielders rated 17 to 22. Of which 49 are 22 rated. That's only 6 midfielders per team. Once the 22 raters turn 23 even less available. There are some players with a PS stat of 16 and below but a lot of these are second stats and i doubt anyone wants to play someone 16 rated? For me, the answer is teams will have to use their scouts to buy reserves.
It's a managers responsibility to field a team, scouts enable them to do this easily enough.

Yeah that was my thought.... hopefully the shitter the better so that they can stay in the reserves as long as possible and also are as cheap as possible

I did exactly the same excercise at the start of the season. There are some scary drop off points when these reserve players retire and/or promote!

I thing the reserve cap should be lifted to 24 rated. Iv been saying this for a few season now and now look at the amount of 23 rated players leaving the game end of season. It is now starting the same with 24 rated players. we lost nearly 100 players last season. We will loose just as many this season and with retiring players also there will be very few players around in a few season.one positive is that the value of youth player should rise.
Scott. you say it a managers responsibilty to look after reserves. I AGREE.but if a manager has 20 youth players(which is average squad size) an over the course of the season 3 get promoted.and during a random game 2 get injured or suspended then you are in trouble. Where are you suppose to get players from when there isnt any around.

Agree with Scott. This is not an issue and raising the skill cap of the reserves will not solve anything. Managers can easily fill these holes by scouting reserve players cheaply.

Agreed. But is the penalty for not having 16 reserve players sufficient?

Agreed. But is the penalty for not having 16 reserve players sufficient? No, the fine needs to impact the senior team.
