2.4 TEAM TACTICS
----------------
Each manager may choose a tactic for his team for a game.
The tactic can be changed during the game by suitable
instructions in the teamsheets.
This is the listing of possible tactics in ESMS:
N - Normal
A balanced formation which is often underrated, N carries the advantage against teams playing A or E, as it is strong enough to defend against the two aggressive formations and nick the odd goal against them. N is an uncomplicated tactic which works best with a simple 442 formation or slight variations. P and L formations counter N however.
Suggested formation: 4-4-2 N
P - Passing
One of the most popular formations, P is a free flowing passing tactic which focuses on midfield players, boosting the abilities of DM, MF and AM players. It is common to see plenty of players in these positions when a team plays this formation, utilizing a 4132 or 4321 formation to maximise the team’s strengths. To utilise it best however, you’ll need your defenders and strikers to be able to pass the ball- high secondaries really work here. The tactic is particularly effective against N and L tactics as the passing team will keep a ball and control a game. P will struggle against C and D formations.
Suggested formation: 4-3-2-1 P
C - Counter Attacking
The obvious choice against a better team, C turns the tables on A and P formations, breaking quickly and exploiting the gaps that those tactics leave behind. Often utilised with a 5 man defence or a defensive midfielder, counter attacking formations rely on a strong defence and goalkeeper and a striker capable of finishing the limited chance they receive. The tactic struggles against L and E formations
Suggested formation: 5-3-2 C
L - Long Ball
A rarely seen tactic, partially due to the stigma of playing such a dull brand of football, but like N it struggles because it is countered by the very popular P. Also countered by uncommon D tactics, L is a tactic that can be useful if you are weaker than your opponent in midfield as the play will largely bypass the middle of the pitch. L relies on a strong defensive unit and a striker or strikers than can be relied on to finish the chances that they will undoubtedly get. L is also known for adding a large portion of randomness to a result which means it can be very effective against better teams or those playing C or N.
Suggested formation: 5-3-2 L
A - Attacking
Effective against D and E tactics but also popular when chasing a game as it creates a lot of chances- at both ends- and can really help you get back into a game. Playing it for the whole 90 minutes is generally a bad idea though as you will concede enough chances for most opponents to be able to exploit, although if it comes off well you may end up boosting your goal difference significantly. Attacking struggles against C and N tactics which are slow and careful enough to pick off attacking teams.
Suggested formation: 4-3-1-2 A
D - Defensive
Holding back and playing cautiously is never a popular option, particularly at home, but it can be effective, certainly against long ball or passing tactics and particularly when you have a strong defence, whether that is a highly skilled group of tacklers or just a crowded 5 man back line. It does struggle against A and E, both of which are quite common, so a D tactic must be exercised with caution.
Suggested formation:5-4-1 D
E - European
A slightly more attacking style of passing, which at its zenith would be considered total football. It is particularly punishing to the teams that try to play more conservatively with either C or D tactics. E is also a tactic that gives a real boost to specialist DM and AM positions, so many E tactics will utilize one or the other. Being countered only by the reasonably uncommon N and A, European is quite a popular tactic for use on a regular basis.
Suggested formation: 4-3-1-2 E
