I'm guessing Porto have gone through ahead of me on level of opponents played/results against higher opposition? Wait, what was the actual tiebreaker for this? Elite Game - Osasuna 1-1 Aberdeen (H) - Porto 1-3 Inter (H) - 1pt v 0pt Div 1 Game - Osasuna 3-1 Valencia (H) - Porto 1-1 Rangers (H) - 3pt (4pt) v 1pt (1pt) Div 2 Game - Sunderland 2-0 Osasuna (A) - Sao Paulo 0-2 Porto (A) 0pt (4pt) v 3pt (4pt) Shouldn't Osasuna go through based on results against higher opposition? That's the only tiebreaker the rules mentioned beyond GD/GF/GA. I think the table just has it autoformatted for alphabetical order at this point The rules state if say there were a few teams with the same points and goal difference for and against in 16th place then there 3 matches would be looked at and extra points awarded for wins or draws and goals against teams in higher groups! this would encourage clubs to play entertaining attacking football! its not just as straight forward as 3 1 0 points, goals scored against teams in higher divisions as well as goals conceded against teams in lower divisions all carry + or - points you both had drawn matches against the teams in your own division Osasuna won against a team one division below FC Porto won against a team one division below Osasuna lost to a team two divisions below FC Porto lost to a team one division above you can then argue FC Porto scored against an Elite Club but conceded three, then Osasuna conceded two to a Divison Two club which IMO carries more minus points So i'd still say Osasuna's loss to Sunderland is the main reason FC Porto finished above them

Is it not fairer across the board to view difficulty of opponents as Div2/1/Elite? The difference in divisions isn't all that relative. Elite would be a higher group than 1, than 2. Being in a division up or down isn't really a group. It's realistically fairer to balance results out as vs Elite, vs Division 1 and vs Division 2 as those are actual set groups rather than ones that are entirely flexible to individual clubs. Osasuna in this instance can't physically play a team in a higher division so just get penalised for being in a higher league at that point. At least with the groups of Elite/1/2 there are defined groups (as set out in the rules) rather than ones constantly changing which seems a bit odd. Happy to let it go if others think your explanation is fair and I'm just rambling, just trying to put it across how I see it.

Does being in the highest league not carry the expectation that you should beat the teams in the two divisions below you

Does being in the highest league not carry the expectation that you should beat the teams in the two divisions below you Honestly don’t see why it matters when we both play a same set of Elite/1/2. Penalising clubs for being in a higher division for the sake of it

Penalising clubs for being in a higher division for the sake of it It is a cup game and I did mention that losing that game to div 2 was a factor in Osasuna finishing 17th. I'm sure this rule was introduced I believe 5 or so seasons ago when there was a similar scenario.
