Ridiculously surprised with that, the stats were all against us. Attacking v Attacking whilst we were away from home. My guys managed to battle it out until the very end coming from behind to win no less.
Elsewhere Ajax secure an expected victory, our next opponents Everton brush Werder aside, Man City win against a now managerless Schalke, Arsenal come out on top in the north London Derby and shock of the week, Lyon pull a draw from Rangers after Gers Keeper Belushi is injured early doors.
Good start to the season and here's hoping we continue on this way

An important win and one we really needed to start the season off well. Great to see over 100,000 fans packing into Highbury as well!

Will take that. Cant wait to hammer Rangers Bet you don't 'hammer Rangers' you may sneak a win as your team is adequate enough, but you are being fantastical with your excitement. Calm down missus we will soon find out

Read my match report this morning after my nightshift and though uh oh here we go when my keeper was taken off injured, on came my rookie keeper, but we dominated most of the match and then Lyon went down to 10 men things were evened out. After initially being a bit annoyed we didn't get all three points I had a good look at things, Lyon went for it, so credit to the caretaker boss, they have a good team and wont be anybody's whipping boy, except to maybe Man City as they are gonna hammer everyone ! Going to purchase a decent back up keeper who can maybe hold the fort if things go pear shaped again, Bulushi is a big loss, 2 games out will see us struggle a bit, was the only injury in week one ! Taking stock it's an away point and we scored a couple of goals, we are sitting mid table and as predicted I think we are a top four or five side, a few teams have got the edge over us, but if we are smart and play to our strengths, then most teams will struggle to beat us .

Was it Lyon who were left in tatters by Pezza? And youre satisfied with a point?
Lack of ambition with some of you guys.

Have you looked at Lyon, they still actually have a decent team , didn't say I was satisfied, but did say considering the loss of my keeper that a point was pretty much ok. Week one and you are in full troll mode already, can you contribute in any other way ? I am starting to doubt it. Plenty of ambition in my team and if you hang around long enough you will see that.

Week one and the table fairly reflects most predictions.
Scott talks of ambition, we all have ambition. Whether it's to gain promotion to Elite, avoid relegation, develop our team or build a bigger stadium!
Ambition is such a personal thing. One man can never judge another's. As such respect should be afforded and the rewards reaped for some would disappoint others.
My ambition!? To perform well enough behind Ajax etc and a better cup run - despite having Bayern first game. To further develop my youngish team and to enjoy this season and maybe not be looking over my shoulder too much.

That isnt ambition, thats having goals. You are right, we all have goals, tone and his tripple statted team, pezza and his stadium, chris and his transfer policies Ambition though is about wanting not just to achieve your goals, but to be the best. We have sides who have won titles sliding down the efl ranks. We have Villa meanwhile flying up them. People will always justify their chosen route, but ambition should be easy to recognise. Some however accept mediocrity for no other reason than because its easier to accept things than change them. Ahmed hasnt flukes his way to the team he has, neither has john fluked his success. So at some point people need to look at their methods and accept the got something wrong somewhere along the line rather than find excuses and blame others.

But who knows where you are in your ambition?
Ahmed didn't fluke getting into division two but the fact remains he was there. Ambition is longer than just one match, one season, one person.

So at some point people need to look at their methods and accept the got something wrong somewhere along the line rather than find excuses and blame others. I actually agree with lots of your points, but get lost in them as you are pretty one dimensional in your way of thinking. In Rangers case I have told you how I got to this point, I had my little girl five years ago, told Malky I didn't have the time anymore, but changed my mind and quit all the other games I played, I thought 'feck it' let's stay and rip this team up and build a team of youngsters, that will be fun and we will hopefully one day be a really good team again, I stayed for the challenge of doing something different, this was both a goal and an ambition to build a good Rangers side on the park and off, just a simple plan without great expectations as my priorities lay elsewhere. My plan wasn't perfect and had many flaws, I brought in great young players and persevered with a great young keeper, I tried bringing in experienced higher rated players to develop the young ones, I struggled at the bottom of the Elite league and my young players didn't develop as well as I had hoped, reconstruction kept me in the top league I had been relegated from, I loaned players out and I sacrificed spending on players for a bigger stadium which would bring in revenue. I had success at Rangers in the past and I maybe could have achieved so much more, but then again maybe not, but I chose a path to take my team down and I am still travelling down that path or route as you call it. Mediocrity and finding excuses and blaming people might be your viewpoint and your entitled to that, it's a forum after all, but I strongly disagree with all that, which is my opinion. How long will Villa stay in the Elite league and how do they stay in the Elite, do they do the 'dreaded rebuild or do they scout another keeper and sign older high players like some others do, and accept trying to keep their heads above water in a sea of bigger fish? Whatever they do then that's the route they chose, ambition or a goal or a challenge, could be any of the three, it's how the manager perceives it. Credit to the Real Madrid's and Bayern Munich's they are big guns of Elite and should be applauded for their domination and efforts, these teams are what the Celtic's Benfica's Barcelona's and Marseilles and others aspire to. Not everything is as black and white as you make it out Scott, everyone who plays the game has their reasons for doing what they do, good and bad and some roll the dice and gamble more, but if we all followed the same route then the game would be boring.

But ultimately we are all playing for the same reason arent we? Just choosing different methods of trying to achieve it.
My post wasnt directed at yourself gazza, more just general discussion as i had a poo at work.
Will Villa stay in the Elite? Probably not. But the reality is, they shouldnt have even got that far in the first place.
He bought an oap defender for a lot of money, i cant remember the fee but im sure it was about 10-12mil. Meanwhile you had other teams sat on large bankrolls unwilling to.
He is now an elite team, they arent.
As for choosing different routes in the game, thats a totally seperate subject and one that i LOVE!!!!
Ive long argued attacking midfielders have little to no value in terms of scoring goals. And the counter argument has been their shooting increases team goals. But it doesnt. Look at Newcastle for proof that extra statted players arent worth the sacrifice of a larger main attribute. Credit for tone for trying that route as nobody had done before. But his side and the figures every season back that up. Yet still people persist with them.
Or the youth option. Time and again people build a team full of youths. And not once has that team ever developed into a squad worthy of a mention. The reasons why are endless, but the primary one is they will just never be good enough. On paper they should, but they wont. Massive clubs can buy the ready made stars to replace their retiring stars. As well as having yth policies focussed on bring through 3 future stars every 2-3 seasons. Its an establisbed process and one that negates the entire rebuild philosophy when you considet how it operates.
Right im off bed my brain hurts.
