Marseille v Real Madrid
Newcomers Marseille take on under achievers Real in what promises to be a very close encounter. The fans from both sides can remember when the great Nistelrooy scored the goals. Those days are long gone now, but new blood has replaced the great striker at both clubs. Real will be looking for a strong start this season after failing to make an impact last season. New strikers indicate their weakness last season with goals virtually non existent. Marseille are the new boys, but they surely won’t sit back and take it at home. Both sides are well established, but I would favour Real this season.
Players to watch: - Trezeguet and Gavilan
Marseille will enjoy the home advantage and dig out a draw; 1-1.
Liverpool v Feyenoord
Feyenoord are on a bit of a downward slope and need a plan to replace their ever ageing squad. Liverpool has a big gaffer at the helm who can build on last years successful season and promotion. With a massive squad, Feyenoord may be a bit spoilt for choice, but they lack quality in the middle of the park where Liverpool have brought in some experience. This should be a very close game that can go either way.
Players to watch: - Crespo and Rosicky
Too difficult to call, but Liverpool run the midfield; 2-1
Celtic FC v Ajax
Ajax had a great season that almost brought back to back promotion to the Dutch club. Celtic, on the other hand, have found life outside the elite league difficult, but hope to improve on a disappointing last season. I believe Ajax will continue their bright football from last season, but also expect Celtic will be a different outfit.
Players to watch: - Rodriguez and Gil
Spirited Ajax facing a depressed Celtic? I don’t think so; 1-0
Valencia v Barcelona (GAME OF THE WEEK)
Valencia have had the most radical transformation in recent seasons, but appear to have brought in some experience to support the youngsters. Barcelona have never reached the heights the fans demand and deserve, but have steadily been improving over the seasons. This is the biggest game of the division this round and both sides will be hoping for a good start. It’s very difficult to make a prediction as tactics will play an important part.
Players to watch: - Thuram and Lloris
Spanish giants clash; 1-1
